Rules & Regulations

General Rules  

  1. Each cemetery shall be open from sunrise to sunset.
  2. Everyone shall respect the solemn nature of the grounds exercising orderly and quiet behavior.
  3. No motorized recreational vehicles are allowed in any cemetery.
  4. The grounds are to be entered only through established entrances.
  5. Guided tours and special memorial services may be authorized by the Cemetery commission. Requests should be made through the office of the First Selectman.
  6. Only human remains may be interred in any Lebanon cemetery.
  7. All persons are strictly prohibited from marring or moving any memorial, defacing or injuring any property whatsoever within the cemetery grounds.
  8. No repairs may be made to any monuments without the permission of the Cemetery Commission
  9. Only photographs of headstones are permitted. No rubbings shall be allowed without the written permission of the Cemetery Commission
  10. The rules and regulations of the cemeteries in the Town of Lebanon are subject to change at the discretion of the Cemetery Commission.
  11. Neither the Cemetery Commission nor the Town of Lebanon will be held liable for vandalism.

Interments

  1. All graves (whether for standard or cremation burials) must be opened and closed under the supervision of the Sexton or agents of the Sexton.
  2. Outer Burial Containers or Vaults shall be utilized for full burials in all cemeteries. There are limited options for Green Burials in Lebanon Cemeteries
  3. Interments, disinterment or grave openings are prohibited on Sunday  unless required for public health or religious reasons.
  4. The family or custodian of the Burial Site shall, within 60 days, remove all flowers and refuse left behind after an interment.

Monuments & Ornamentation

  1. Only one monument will be allowed on adjacent (companion or family) multi-burial sites. Only flush markers are allowed on individual graves within such multi-burial sites. Fences or hedge railings to enclose such multi-burial sites are not allowed.
  2. The use of cornerstones is encouraged, but not required. Cornerstones shall be no larger than 6 inches square and should be placed on the inside edge of the plot.
  3. Monuments shall not be wider than 7 feet nor taller than 4 feet. A single grave monument shall not be taller than 4 feet.
  4. All monuments shall be erected to conform to the safety and uniformity of the cemetery.
  5. All monuments shall be erected on a poured concrete foundation with minimum surface dimensions are the same as the base of the monument and with depth of 42 inches where possible. Specific construction requirements are available at the Sexton's office.
  6. To enable proper mowing and monument maintenance, planting of trees or shrubs is not allowed. They can up root the monument and cause monuments to topple. The Commission has the right to remove plantings of trees or shrubs after notice has been given to the owners or family members.
  7. Flowers and bulbs may be planted within  1 foot of the front of the headstone and can be protected by an edging. However, the custodian/owner of the burial site is  responsible for the upkeep of that area.
  8. Cut flowers or annual flowers can be kept in non-glass containers no bigger than 2 gallons, and shall be located to avoid interfering  with mowing or trimming. Cemetery workers may remove neglected and dead plants.
  9. The Commission strives to maintain neat and clean cemeteries. Outdated ornamentations will be cleaned twice each year on the week before Memorial Day and the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Otherwise it is the responsibility of the family to clean their grave sites no later than 2 months after a holiday. After that time, the town reserves the right to remove decorations. The Cremation Area may have ornamentation from October 15 until April 15. Graves sites are to be kept neat and free of old or faded flowers. Ornamentations in disrepair will be removed at the discretion of the Cemetery Commission.
